- Physical fitness: Swimming is a low-impact form of exercise that can improve children’s cardiovascular and respiratory health, muscular strength, and endurance.
- Safety: Learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning, which is one of the leading causes of death among children.
- Confidence and self-esteem: As children learn to swim and improve their skills, they gain confidence in their abilities, which can improve their self-esteem.
- Socialization: Swimming classes provide an opportunity for children to interact with peers in a fun and safe environment.
- Stress relief: Swimming can be a great way for children to release stress and tension, particularly if they are struggling with anxiety or other mental health issues.
- Coordination and balance: Swimming requires children to use their entire body, which can improve their coordination and balance.
- Improved cognitive function: Studies have shown that physical exercise, such as swimming, can improve cognitive function and academic performance in children.
Overall, swimming classes can be a fun and rewarding experience for children, providing them with physical, social, and emotional benefits that can last a lifetime.
What will my child learn in kids class?
At Sailfish Swim Academy, we focus on ensuring children feel comfortable and confident in water right from the start through fundamental skills.
1. We teach water entry by jumping into the pool safely
2. Gradually, children progress to gliding in from a sitting position at the poolside at counts of 3, 5, and 7, which helps them to develop buoyancy.
Once they are comfortable with water entry, we move on to teach:
1. Children to independently hold Starfish Float for 5 counts
2. Children to independently hold Mushroom Float for 10 counts
3. Children to independently backfloat for 10 counts
4. Master rocket to back float technique
These are fundamental skills that every swimmer should master in order to progress to more advanced techniques, and we help children to learn these techniques step-by-step. By practicing these techniques, children can build their confidence and develop a strong foundation for more advanced swimming skills.
1. By first focusing on proper body position and kicking technique with a rocket kick for 10 counts.
2. Then, we teach the 4 hand pulls of the freestyle stroke and incorporate sidekicks to help develop the full stroke.
Once students are comfortable with these techniques, our goal is to have our students complete 2 laps of basic freestyle.
For advanced freestyle,
1. We build upon the basics by teaching alternate arm strokes for 10 meters, focusing on side-to-side rotation for better efficiency and speed.
2. We then teach the freestyle catch technique, where the hand enters the water and pulls back in a scooping motion to generate more power.
3. Finally, we emphasise the freestyle glide for 10 meters to help our students maintain momentum and speed.
These techniques will help students swim faster and with greater efficiency in the water.
1. We start teaching the basic backstroke by emphasizing proper body positioning – ears fully submerged with their chip up, tummy up, back straight, and toes pointed.
2. We instruct our students to breathe every 5 counts while performing hand pulls with their shoulders touching their ears.
Our experienced coaches will guide the students through each step, ensuring they are comfortable with the basics before progressing to advanced backstroke techniques.
For advanced backstroke,
1. We teach students the S-hand pull and rotation techniques to maximise swimming efficiency.
2. We introduce alternate hand pulls to further improve form and speed.
For basic breaststroke,
1. We emphasize proper technique for the breaststroke kick, including the W-shape bent, kick, close and glide, followed by breaststroke pull with correct hand timing.
2. We also focus on developing good arm and leg coordination, to ensure proper execution of the stroke.
As students progress to advanced breaststroke,
1. We teach them to incorporate a full glide after every kick, with their body in an up high position while breathing.
2. Additionally, we work towards students being able to glide every stroke for 4 laps, which requires a high level of stamina, endurance, and mastery of the breaststroke technique.
Our experienced coaches provide personalised attention and feedback to help students improve their technique and achieve their goals.
For basic butterfly,
1. We begin with the caterpillar exercise, which involves emulating a wave-like motion with the body five times.
2. Next is the cocoon exercise, where the hands are brought forward and the chest is pushed downwards to emulate a wave-like motion.
Once the basic techniques are mastered,
1. We teach the butterfly stroke with proper hand pulls.
2. For advanced butterfly, we focus on synchronising the arms and legs to achieve the stroke momentum.
3. Students will be able to swim six laps of butterfly with momentum stroke and alternate their breathing to improve their endurance and technique.
Our experienced coaches are dedicated to ensuring that each student receives personalised attention and guidance throughout the learning process.
Sailfish Swim Academy incorporates land training as part of its comprehensive swim program to help students improve their overall swimming performance.
The program starts with a 15-minute warm-up, which includes head movements, arm swings, and squats to get the body ready for more intense exercises. This is followed by a 15-minute running session with speed up and speed maintain calls to improve cardiovascular endurance.
For students aged 7 years old and above, the academy provides a 20-minute stroke strength training session. This includes exercises such as arm circles, shoulder taps, mountain climbers, plank arm rises, skating squats, lunges squats, stream line squats, back up alternate arms, back up airplane circles, and backstroke kicks at a 45-degree angle. These exercises help build strength in the muscles used during swimming strokes and improve technique.
To ensure proper form and technique, the academy also offers a 10-minute stroke correction session that focuses on double and single hand catch, fast pulls for freestyle, breaststroke with streamlines, backstroke with one hand up and one hand down, and butterfly stroke with arm and head movements.
Finally, the academy includes a 5-minute stretching session to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injury. This includes neck stretches, shoulder rows, prone chest stretches, reverse bridges, sitting hamstring stretches, triceps stretches, butterfly stretches, knee to chest stretches, and extended puppy poses.
Overall, land training at Sailfish Swim Academy provides numerous benefits to students, including increased strength, improved technique, better coordination and balance, and reduced risk of injury.

Frequently Asked Questions
Despite the rain, our classes will still be ongoing as scheduled. We never cancel class to ensure dedicated students can always come and get the most out of their training. Please note that we won’t be able to replace absences due to the rain, but we’ll make sure to keep everyone safe and dry. Our syllabus includes land training which focuses on stroke correction, building stamina, and strength, essential components of swimming lessons. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure to make the most of the time we have in the pool, regardless of the weather.
Swimwear – Choose a comfortable and appropriate swimsuit that fits well and allows freedom of movement. Avoid loose or baggy clothing, which can become heavy and uncomfortable when wet.
Goggles – Goggles can help your child see underwater and boost their confidence in the water.
Swim cap – For children with long hair, a swim cap can help keep hair out of their face. However, it is not necessary.
Kickboard – Kickboard is essential to help children learn proper kicking techniques and build strength in their legs.
Towels – Towels to dry off after the lesson.
Extra clothes – Have a change of clothes ready for your child after the lesson to ensure your child is comfortable and warm after the lesson
The expectations for 7 years and above to complete all 4 strokes are 2 years. Half a year to complete free style and swim independently. After 2 years he/she will be ready to join competitive program and go for competitions. However, this varies highly based on child’s water adaptability, trauma experience, and willingness to socialize with strangers. Remember, learning to swim is a process, and every child learns at their own pace. By staying positive, patient, and supportive, you can help your child develop the confidence and skills they need to become a strong and confident swimmer.
There can be several reasons why some children progress slowly at swimming, and here are some common ones:
1. Fear of water or a traumatic experience in the water may progress more slowly as they learn to overcome their fear and build their confidence in the water.
2. Limited exposure to water or have not had the opportunity to swim regularly may take longer to develop the necessary skills and techniques.
3. Physical limitations or disabilities that make it more challenging to learn to swim, such as low muscle tone or coordination difficulties.
4. Every child learns differently, and some children may require a different teaching approach or more time to grasp certain concepts or techniques.
5. Children who are easily distracted or have difficulty focusing may struggle to stay engaged and progress more slowly.
If your child is progressing slowly in swimming, there are several things you can do to help. Here are some suggestions:
1. Talk to the coach to gain their perspective. The coach can provide insight into your child’s progress, help set specific goals, identify any challenges, and collaborate as a team to support your child’s progress.
2. Consistent attendance helps your child retain the skills and techniques they learn in class, and reinforces their confidence in the water.
3. Consider enrolling your child in private lessons to provide additional one-on-one instruction and support.
4. Encourage your child to keep trying, let them know that progress takes time, and celebrate their small achievements along the way.Remember that every child learns at their own pace. Be patient, supportive and focus on the positive aspects of your child’s progress.
By providing plenty of support and encouragement, and addressing any underlying concerns, you can help your child overcome any challenges and progress at their own pace in swimming.
Absolutely, we understand that sometimes there may be circumstances that require you to freeze your child’s swimming lessons for a month. If you would like to book your slots in advance and pay the fees in advance, we can make the necessary arrangements. However, please keep in mind that if your child is a beginner, missing lessons consistently may have a negative impact on their progress. We highly recommend attending lessons consistently to build muscle memory, endurance, and to develop their skills. We’re happy to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about your child’s progress in swimming and how we can work together to ensure their success.
We’re happy to offer replacements for missed swimming lessons, as long as we’re informed at least 24 hours in advance. Please inform our administration team of any upcoming absences, and replacements will be valid for 30 days before and after the date of absence. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping us informed, as this allows us to make the necessary arrangements to ensure your child doesn’t miss out on their swimming lessons. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns about
our replacement policy.
