To prepare for competitive swimming, our program focuses on building endurance, strength, and technique in each stroke. To achieve these goals, we gradually increase the distance and intensity of the swimming drills and workouts.
For freestyle, we start by ensuring that our students have mastered proper technique for each of the four basic strokes. Once they have achieved proficiency in these strokes, we progress to refining their freestyle technique, building endurance and speed, and incorporating interval training. The ability to swim 300 meters of freestyle nonstop is a good indicator that they are ready to progress to the competitive level.
In addition to freestyle, we focus on developing proficiency in the other three strokes: backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Students who can swim 100 meters of freestyle in under 3:30s have demonstrated good speed and endurance, which are essential for competitive swimming.
We also train our students in the individual medley, which involves swimming equal distances of all four strokes in a specific order. A 400-meter individual medley requires a balance of speed, endurance, and technique in all four strokes.
Finally, we work with our students to build their endurance in the demanding butterfly stroke. Being able to swim 200 meters of butterfly nonstop is an impressive achievement and a good indication that they are ready for the rigors of competitive swimming.
